Social Report

Saturday, October 8th, the staff has planned a special treat for children, young and old!  Decorate your own taffy apple and enjoy the movie "Hotel
Transylvania".   Apples are $5 each.  Snacks, cider and hot cocoa provided on the 3rd floor of the SJRYC from 1-3 pm.

If you haven't stopped by the Club on a Saturday afternoon you've missed watching football with some of the most devoted Michigan and Michigan State fans you can find outside of the Big House. Once in a while they will even let a Notre Dame fame join the mix! The Keepers Bar has three screens to give everyone a chance to watch their favorite team WIN. Our staff always manages to have a few complimentary snacks for the reluctant tailgaters to enjoy during game time. Come on by and check it out.

Social Report

Autumn, with all it's beauty is here, and will be gone in just a few weeks.  With that in mind we tried to plan many opportunities for our members to enjoy the SJRYC while our Michigan weather is still agreeable.

Saturday, October 1st, the 3rd floor of the Club will be beautifully decorated to welcome all the past Commodores in attendance as will as Susan Greco, this year's Commodore and the rest of our 2016 Board of Directors.  The Commodore's  Bash is held each year to honor those who have excepted a role in leadership and have spent many hours stewarding the SJRYC for it's members.  Our staff has planned a terrific menu and will need your reservation ASAP.   After dinner, Slim Gypsy Baggage will entertain both dancers and other music lovers for the evening. Tickets to see the band only will be available for sale at The Keeper's bar beginning at 8pm, Saturday evening.

The St. Joe River Yacht Club Euchre Challenge will start again on October 5th and continue through December every Wednesday night. We have 40 members who have already joined the Challenge and hope to have many more. Several of our leading players had not played euchre before April of this year when we began the competition. There is room on the second floor of the Club for many more challengers, so come join the fun.  Come early and have dinner or a drink, but be in your chair ready to play at 7 pm. We play 7 rounds switching partners every 15 minutes. The weekly trophy is presented at 9 pm to the player with the highest score for the evening. You can invite friends and family to join you for a game, however only members can compete to become the SJRYC Euchre Challenge Champion for 2016.

Treasurer's Report
Galen Cawley
Our Tri State financial results were good, as we netted over $21,000 from the sales of tickets, food, and merchandise to help our bank account.   Total gross income was close to $50,000, so  the expenses of running the event is a substantial factor. As an example of the importance of gaining that income to meet our club's expenses, within two weeks afterward, it became  time to spend almost twice that amount to pay for our property taxes, some sales tax, and a federal tax payment.  The appreciation and need for all of you who spent many hours volunteering  is obviously very apparent. We realize that it would be impossible to hold the event without the time and effort that you, as members, have put in. Our expectations of income for the rest of the year is reduced, as we will have  only the income from the bar/restaurant ... pool closed, Rhumbline Bar operating at  reduced hours and days, and snowbirds going to warmer climates. Keep coming back ... it's a nice place to visit!

From the Top of The Mast
Susan Greco, Commodore

September, as we know, means a transition from summer into fall! So, along with the season’s change comes time to consider what our Club has to offer for the rest of 2016! You can source your family’s Club-fun on the weekly e-blast newsletter for the next week or so and then go to the Club events’ calendar on the website for future events. Coming up, live on Saturday, September 3rd for the Tri-State party, is PS Dump Your Boyfriend, aka Pfreak Show; and on Labor Day Monday, Jenna Mammina will entertain us with her vocal stylings. Then on October 1, I am personally excited to experience Slim Gypsy Baggage’s eclectic rock, funk and soulful sounds after a great SJRYC dinner. Everyone is welcome to join in for a great dinner and party!

Our recent member survey revealed that those of you who responded are interested in live entertainment; wine, beer, or liquor tastings; guest chef events; regattas; speaking presentations; water aerobics or yoga; children’s programs; and euchre. We also discovered that you really enjoy drinks and cocktails at the Club, as much or more than a meal. If you did or didn’t answer the survey, let us know about specific events and entertainment for all ages that you’d like to see in 2017.

Now is the time to begin planning and booking events, so contact Joann (gm@sjryc.com) or talk to a Board member very soon to let us know your preferences!

Applications for the 2017 Board of Directors will be accepted through September 15th! We need expertise in all areas of life, business, management, leadership, mechanical, technical, and most important a desire to have fun and to participate with the other Board members to promote our mission: “SJRYC strives to provide a casual atmosphere, affordable prices, and a spirit of fellowship, community and education, building on a rich history of boating, swimming, and socializing in a unique nautical location.” If you’re hesitant about submitting your application or need more information, feel free to contact me (commodore@sjryc.com) or another Board Member. You can find application details in the weekly e-blast newsletter published on Monday mornings.

Planning for 2017 also must include a careful review of our facilities’ needs and our financial position. Consideration must be given to the kitchen’s old stoves/ovens; the 10-year-old non-chip compatible point-of sale system; the ice maker; pool maintenance, tuck-pointing of the Clubhouse and the Keeper’s House; and air handling in the Clubhouse just to name a few challenges ahead of us. Meanwhile, costs to run our operation continue to rise. Your Board of Directors and General Manager understand you have entrusted us with making decisions that provide the most prudent use of your precious fees and dues. We also know that we must consider what would contribute to your enjoyment at the Club such as new and additional outside furniture and umbrellas and perhaps outside music. Let us know what you think!

I truly hope you enjoy the rest of the waning days of summer and look forward to all that fall has to offer! Thanks for being Members! See you on-the-water, at the Rhumbline or in the Clubhouse!
